Japanese Flip App Reviews

Not bad but ...

I would only give 4 stars, because its a good application which helped me a lot to learn new vocabs. Its addictive, efficient and offline. But there are sometimes some mistakes with the pronounciation (in hiragana). What would make this application the creme de la creme are some example sentences of how to use the words, an audio voice , a recorder and a listing by categories of the vocab. These would definitely make this program incontrovertible !

Quite a good app!

This is quite a good application and i do not have any reason to complain about anything. Having said this, I would greatly appreciate some further features if possible. it would be nice if there was a timer integrated: If you are thinking too long but clear the word finally, expired time is taken into account and the word will be tested more frequently than one cleared in shorter time. A quiz mode would be nice, giving you 3, 4, 5 alternatives to choose from instead of tapping a yes or no. It would be also nice if you could adjust the dosage of new vocabulary, giving you a real choice at which pace you want to learn new words, or repeat already cleared ones. Well, despite all these suggestions the app is a great tool to study Japanese and is highly recommended. Thank you very much Andre ;-)

Great learning tool

I bought this app to brush up on my Japanese reading skills. Unless you know Japanese words with the kanji, you will be completely lost when trying to read any written text in Japan. This app will help you learn easy to advanced words with big pictures of the kanji along with kana and definitions. There is no romaji in this app, so you must at least know how to read the kana characters.

Simple, Easy to Use, Makes Learning Fun.

I use Japanese Flip (and Kanji Flip) all the time. It makes learning Japanese fun and it is extremely easy to use on the go. Ive paid over $100 in buying flash cards for learning Japanese and this does exactly what I needed except for only $5. It also feel great supporting a developer that upgrades his app and takes suggestions. If you want to learn Japanese, Japanese Flip and Kanji Flip are very fun ways to start learning!

My killer app

This is my killer app for the iPhone and Touch platform. Im studying for the JLPT 2kyu, and my #1 priority is vocabulary building. This app is spot-on. With 2 hours of commuting per day on crowded trains, Ive tried many different study methods to use that time; flashcards, books, web-apps & programs. This smart flashcard-style app gives me 2 hours of study a day with no Internet connection necessary nor extra items to carry. Thank you for making this App. Bravo & 5 stars.

Awesome app!

Ive built my vocabulary faster with this program than with any other method that Ive used since beginning my studies almost two years ago! Hooray for a brilliant app!!! Well worth more than the paltry sum of 4.99!

Great for Quick, Fun Review of Japanese

Ive been studying Japanese for years now and I have to say that Japanese Flip is one of the better ways to accomplish this. Its fun and takes all the strain out of having to compile all your flashcards. Definitely worth the price of lunch at a fast food joint. To put it in perspective I just bought "Kanji Flip" because I like this one so much! Only a couple of comments / suggestions: 1. some of the entries seem weird (i.e. 隠しカメラ: hidden (spy) camera) and neither my Japanese wife nor I can really believe theyre on the JLPT... perhaps they were added for fun? 2. The author should add the ability to do the flash-card testing by viewing the cards from the English meaning and Hiragana reading as well as from the full word. As it stands now you see the full word and then have to click "Show Answer" to see the English meaning(s) and the pronunciation. Being able to view different "sides" of the flashcards first would allow the student to test himself from English to Japanese as well as Hiragana to Kanji / English. This can help a lot in being able to remember words from the English meaning or from the Japanese pronunciation side instead of just the Kanji side. Add that and I would give it 5 stars.

Fantastic

Ive been studying Japanese for just over a year now and the biggest problem Ive had has been memorizing the vast lists of words and kanji characters needed for the JLPT test. This app has been a great boon to my vocabulary over the past few weeks of using it. Ive impressed myself and my Japanese-speaking friends. This is the app I would have created if I had the skill to program it myself!

Good buy

Ive been using this on the train while going to work. Today I opened up a JLPT Level 2 textbook and noticed a lot of words I had been studying were used in the practice reading questions. I would like to add more words to my app, but am worried about doubling up on some of them, a dictionary function may be good to help guard against that. But as of now, I am very happy with my purchase.

Pretty good

I love the reverse mode that theyve added. Sometimes you recognize a word going from one language to the other but not the other way around. I dont like the algorithm used though-its not very efficient. If I get a word right the first time I see it then I obviously know it pretty well so stop asking me two or three times about it. I find zen nihongo is better in that regard because I can really plow through a lot of words in a short time which is what I need.

Not bad

I used this quite a lot, but now that I have Stickystudy Ill be deleting it. Try the free trial of Stickystudy and youll see why!

Good app but needs to be updated

The JLPT system now has 5 levels. This app needs to be updated to reflect this.

Waste of money

Just wasted $6 for no reason. I wish there was a lite version for free where i couldve tested it out before buying it... Basicly if u dont know japanese writing, u cant use this program. I thought the japanese words would be written with the english alphabet so i could pronounce it and learn the meanings. Can you refund me my money please?

Excellent!

This is an excellent way for anyone studying Japanese to review important vocabulary on the iPhone/iPod. It is exceptional for anyone like me, who is preparing for yet the NEXT level of the JLPT. The fact that this is set up specifically by JLPT level is OUTSTANDING! I also appreciate the BROWSE feature very much.

Like mentioned above.

I used this for over a month while living in japan. Is brilliant. I passed 4th level in a breeze and still use it on boring long train rides to pick up new words or remind me old ones. Really bravo. My top application for language so far on iPhone. Get it you wont regret.

Lacks audio

Im a foreigner living in Japan for 6 years now and I enjoy this app. I believe it will help improve my kanji. It would be greatly appreciated if this app had an audio feature for proper pronunciation.

Kanji

I have recently stopped using this application, because I have found some of the kanji to be incorrect. On a good note, the author replies quickly to feedback. I hope the kanji problems can be fixed soon as this program has a really nice interface and is easy to use. It was my number one Japanese study program. The ability to add your own words to a separate list (as opposed to the original lists) would make a nice additional feature.

Great App!

After reading all the reviews on this one it seemed a little too good to be true, and even a bit suspicious. So I decided to buy another one instead, Newbie 1, and I have to say that I was very disappointed by it. A total letdown with an over-complicated system. I came back this one to give it a shot. Long story short - its exactly what I needed. Now Im considering buying other flip programs too. Good work! One feature request is a reset button so that I can start over on a level, and/or multiple user accounts for if someone else (my wife) wants to try it too.

Most used

Best thing to do on the Tokyo subway. Good algorithm for learning. Pleasant usability and design. 4 stars as I personally miss a few useful functions: - turn off Kanji all together - just Hiragana/ Katakana for the photographic memory people ;) - reverse mode to test by English definitions the Japanese word & Kanji - assign JPTL levels to custom words (one or more levels) Thanks for adding reverse now. Upped the stars ;)

Great appl.

Im studying for the JLPT and this appl. help me a lot when I commute I can study a lot.
