Japanese Flip App Reviews

can be addictive

This is a fun way to learn new words and review old ones. Together with Kotoba (another iPone app), this app made me learn more words in 1 week of playing than in 1 month of attending Kanji classes. Warning: can be addictive as you try to raise your score higher and higher...

Almost perfect

The layout, system, and JLPT levels are superb, and its got me studying Japanese more often. I only wish the kanji combos were easier to figure out, I mean at first looking at the kanji for katakana, I was wondering if the first kanji was kata or just ka. So something like putting a dots between the hiraganas to show how each individual kanji in a kanji combination is pronounced, like 片仮名 would be かた•か•な.

Way over priced but good

There are tons of free apps like thi online. Smart.fm or kanji.kahoi but this one is simalar. And you dot need Internet conection. Good for on the run studying. Still way over priced. I would still buy it again. I need every tool I can get to pass th jlpt

Great

This is just what I was looking for, English meaning, guess it in Japanese, and tap to see the answer. Or Japanese meaning, guess it in English, tap to see the answer. Couldnt be easier or better.

Not much support, get Japanese Flash

I USED to love this app. This used to be the main reason why I had an iPhone. Since I was studying for the jlpt 2 I used this app literally everyday whenever i had a minute of free time as a vocab and kanji builder. However since I found Japanese Flash I no longer use this app for a number of reasons. Honestly, get Japanese flash instead. No multitasking, if I come across a new word and I switch apps to check a dictionary and when I switch back it has to reload and I am taken to the menu. No updates, this version hasnt been updated in a year. I know all the words and kanji and definitions arent 100% correct. Wheres the support to update an incorrect word? Which brings me to my next point... No way to directly notify the developer of an incorrect word. No built in dictionary. No example sentences for the word. No way to change how many words you see at a time. Jlpt 3 and 4 limited the new words to 30 but jlpt 2 is at 70. No way to adjust that. Only Jlpt study sets Japanese Flash corrects all of these problems and more. The developers only program Japanese language apps the Flip apps are just thrown together for every language.

whats up with your pricing policies?

love your program but not loving your pricing policies. one day its 4.99 then the next day its 5.99 then 4.99 then 7.99. you know there are websites that track app prices right? can you just pick a price and go with it?

GOOD program! Could use a bit more to make it excelent though...

What can I say, Im very impressed by this product. However, there are a few things that could be made to make this the absolute BEST Japanese program on ITunes (And that is saying a lot as this is already impressive.) 1. Keep a list of mastered words, and group them for future review better. It seems random now. 2. Example sentences... PLEASE! Even just one! 3. COROLATE WITH KANJI FLIP or at least set it up so in some way we can make the kanji we dont know with the vocab we dont if we have both programs! Over all great work... but you are just shy away from excelence. Just tweak a bit more please!

Pretty good

I still have my Cannon WordTank 9000 which I bought for $350 but that was back in the day. I remember studying kanji all the time on the subway and train. Oh how I wish I had this back then.

nice, but could use example sentences

With the JLPT coming up in a few weeks, I was looking for something to help me boost my vocabulary and kanji without having to connect to the internet so I could use it on my commute to and from school, and this looks like it will do the job. Im glad that this app has the option to choose if you got it right or wrong, but it would be nice to have a few more levels of whether we know it or not (the site I use for kanji has unread, read, familiar, mastered, and review folders to sort the cards into). It would also be nice to have example sentences for the words because for a lot of JLPT questions, you have to be able distinguish between words that may have very similar definitions in English, but different usages in Japanese. Still, this saves me the trouble of having to buy a flashcard app and make my own flashcards. Thanks for making this app!

Great (and addictive) learning tool; super responsive developer

Japanese Flip is the best application available on iTunes for studying JLPT vocabulary. It runs smoothly with no hiccups and after using it for an hour a day for three days my passive vocabulary improved enormously. Passing level 1 will consume much less of my time than it otherwise would have. It only has 6,000 of the 10,000 words on the JLPT and as of this review there are no example sentences, but its still an excellent program and the developed seems set on adding these features and other in the near future. I gave it five stars not because it couldnt benefit from more features but because it does everything it claims to well and because the programs developed actually read my feedback and responded immediately. This program will continue to improve. Buy it now. Its worth your while.

Jump-start your Japanese language study

I have studied Japanese off/on for many years. I have more comprehensive study programs but find myself USING "Japanese Flip" every day since installed. It has rekindled my Japanese study and for that alone it is worth the price of admission. Andre Khromov delivers as represented in the description.

well worth it

This is the best Japanese related app Ive found. Very easy to use. Great for getting in a little vocab practice in your spare time. I would highly recommend it.

Excellent

The way that Kanji Flip databanks words you know, as well as the ones you tend to have trouble with, is ingenious. Its very gratifying to watch your stats improve as you are able to recognize more and more words. Anyone studying Japanese would enhance their studies with this app. Much recommended! Update: Just wanted to add that since writing my initial review I emailed the developer with a question and was very pleased to quickly receive a thoughtful and helpful response. Also, Id like to stress, just as other reviewers have, that this is not merely a flashcard program. Japanese Flip is a sophisticated learning program that helps you learn new words while also focusing on the ones youre having trouble with.

Great!

This is really a great app for drilling vocabulary, particularly if youre taking/thinking about taking the JLPT. The new feature that allows you to choose whether or not to display furigana is fantastic -- I tend to use it both modes: on so that I can absorb the sound-meaning connection, and then off to quiz myself on the kanji. If you have a complaint about the lack of romaji, think twice; learning hiragana and katakana shouldnt take more than a few weeks, and its 100% worth the effort (use Kanji drill for some good practice!).

Quite a fantastic, addicting app

This app is VERY addictive for a Japanese learner of several years. I have been usin it non-stop at every free moment since I got it. Why only 3 stars? Well, I dont think the developer should be quite complacent yet. This needs a couple things. Browse mode should allow you to browse according to the 4 different categories (recent, older, etc.) instead of just all. How else can you review words youve learned recently. Someimes I dont want to get new words slipped in when I just want to review, and there is no way to control where you are in the default browser except by MANUALLY going from start to end. What an oversight and a wasted feature opportunity. Severely misses the mark. Also, as a few have said, where are the example sentences? Its hard to know how to use some words to actually add it to your vocab. Lastly, what is up with the price. Sure I think there is value in it but most people arent going to commit to something this expensive on a whim. Lower the price so more can appreciate this great app. Id gladly up the review score if some of these things are addressed.

The Interface is not the best

The application is not bad at all however the interface needs to be reworked soon because the whole learning experience is affected. iPhone users like beautiful and stunning applications.

Caution

Contains a lot of mistakes, basic words like daitai, shikaru, etc are mixed up and wrong. Also, no example sentences which severely limits usefulness. Finally, you can only practice remembering meanings and readings of Japanese words. There is no way to do the opposite, i.e. practicing remembering Japanese words given English words. Barely useful.

Good App, but...

I like this app and I think it was worth the money. However, as many others have said, there are some things that could be added to make this app even better. First and formost, I think that this app should have example sentances for each word, so that learners can see exactly how the word is used in a sentance. Also, since there are many different forms of the same word, maybe adding in a function to explore the different forms (-ru, -ta, -te, etc.). There are many other things that could be added to make it better, but with cost in mind, thats all I would really suggest for now. Other than that.... great app... I would suggest it to anyone.

Disappointed interactivity

Maybe because I am new to studying Japanese this didnt work well for me.The main problem is, it gives you two choices either to click "right" or "wrong" when it shows you the character. But, because the program shows you only the "right" character answer it doesnt really teach you anything.Because if you click "wrong" to any of them you are wrong and so after a minute you realize they are all "right". And thus trying to use it to study just isnt very interactive.

Fantastic

Well worth the cost. If youre trying to learn to read Japanese, this is the way to go. The flashcard system works very well, introducing new words gradually and repeating difficult words until you get them right. Iterface is sleek and efficient. And unlike a textbook, its actually fun to play because you really feel like youre making progress. A way to more easily browse the word lists, or see meanings / pronunciation of individual kanji in words would be nice (for me, knowing the meaning of kanji really helps word recognition, and having to jump back and forth to my dictionary slows down the pacing). And an option to hide the progress chart to increase the text area. But as it stands its a fantastic investment. Edit: the new screen layout is fantastic! Keep up the good work!
